Customs Make 24lbs Cocaine Seizure at NMIA

Kingston, Jamaica: Twenty-four (24 lbs) of cocaine valued at J$9.5M was seized at the Norman Manley International Airport yesterday (Monday, June 11) at approximately 11:30 am.  The contraband was discovered after a male passenger travelling on a Guyanese passport disembarked Insel Air Flight 7l 851.

The cocaine was found in the shell of an X-Box 360 which was in a green plastic bag.  After the passenger initially cleared customs with a laptop bag and a suitcase that was thoroughly examined and released; he exited the Customs Baggage Hall.  Subsequently, he returned to the Hall under the premise that he left a third bag (the green plastic bag).  The bag was located and scanned which resulted in anomalies being detected.

The gentleman was interviewed in relation to the anomalies and subsequently taken to the Trans National Crime and Narcotics Division (TCND), NMIA Office, where investigations are ongoing.  He revealed that he was paid $US5, 000.00 to transport and deliver the narcotics.  He is currently still in the custody of the TCND.
